In my Cretan village today..

Category: My Cretan life.. | Posted: Tue Apr 20, 2010 1:27 pm

I planted sweet potatoes and second lot of garlic (each with an olive stone of course!)today.I also potted up the Schleffera (umbrella trees)that I grew from seed last year.I gave away many to the villagers who walk past the garden and stop to have a look at what's happening. Most of the ladies love their flowers but they are amused that I put so much effort into non edible plants. This is almost as funny as my Greek..emphasise a word incorrectly and hilarity (or outrage) ensues!
We are pretty much self sufficient, sheep, goats, chickens, rabbits and growing our fruit and veg.Our oil is from our own olive trees and my partner Kostas is skilled at producing beautiful bowls, chopping boards and many other lovely items from the wood.He used to have a tourist shop but there's not so many visitors since the crisis.Wine and Raki from our vines with plenty to spare. We use the milk from the goats and sheep to make cheese and yogurt.
It's easy to trade too either in items, produce or skills.I was grooming, training, breeding and showing dogs for 37 years in the UK so there's always plenty of people wanting help with something "doggy".Delivering or hand-rearing puppies and training (still rare here)the large powerful breeds.I also paint signs for businesses, this was from one sign I did to help a friend and word spread. So then someone will come and rotavate your land or fix your plumbing etc.
It's a wonderful life and never a dull moment!

I like Crete, and Greece, a lot. It sounds like you're making yourself at home alright. :) Wish the tourist agencies didn't screw up the prices for Greece. This year was just too expensive for us to go.
