Mirror, mirror on the fence...

Category: My Sunshine Coast Garden | Posted: Tue May 22, 2012 3:38 pm

I'm always on the lookout for large mirrors. I place them in shady spots so they can reflect light onto the plants there and their images once grown, doubling the visual impact of them. Full post at http://www.johnmarian.com/blog/light-in-the-shadows/.

Reeling in Halfmoon Bay BC

Category: My Sunshine Coast Garden | Posted: Mon May 14, 2012 4:10 pm

I've never determined for certain what the original reels held, but these make excellent decorative footings for trees, vegetables.... and if you flip them flat side up, they create a natural circle boundary for a mower. There's more pictures at http://www.johnmarian.com/blog/oh-babe-you-got-me-reeling/

What would you use them for? Does anyone else do something similar?

Working with conveyor belting

Category: My Sunshine Coast Garden | Posted: Fri May 11, 2012 7:10 pm

I can't recall where I saw my first pile of discarded conveyer belting. The imbedded value in terms of raw material and expended manufacturing energy and creativity would have been glaringly obvious, as it is in other discards of industry. It was crying out to be used. Immediately apparent was its potential as a replacement for wood siding in my raised beds.

The belting gives me a head start on my spring gardening; the Sunshine Coast can have odd spring weather patterns. Yesterday morning (May 10) started out at a mere 2 degrees, and some folks reported frost. Unusual... but the belting provides the extra heat parts of the garden need to thrive.

Summer '94 the beds are in full on production ( photo / image / picture from johnmarian's Garden )
