Too bad I can't do a rain dance...

Category: Miscellaneous garden notes and what-have-yous | Posted: Thu Aug 28, 2008 2:45 pm

I haven't been to the Stew in a while. It's been a VERY busy time lately. I am a college student and went back to school last week, plus work, church, volunteering, keeping house, etc. All these things leave little time for gardening.

We need rain here in Southwestern Indiana, and boy are my garden and flower bed showing it! I have to water, water, water and sometimes it still seems like things are looking a little blah. Lots of leaves turning brown on my tomato plants, but the toms still seem to be turning, which is good. I used up all the romas that were ready on Tuesday by making some tomato pasta sauce. The hubby and I will be enjoying some spaghetti with sauce made from scratch this evening! We've made the sauce before, but considering the tomatoes and herbs were from our own garden this time and are completely organic, I can only imagine that it will taste even better!

I looked outside last night, and can tell I will have even more tomatoes to pick when I get home from class today. Luckily I have lots of friends and family to share with, because with the hubby not liking tomatoes, there is no way I could eat them all by myself!

Pictures of the garden, harvests, beagle, etc. to come as soon as we can get our camera fixed! Hope everyone is having a good end of summer and your gardens are doing well!

Enjoying the fruits of my labor?

Category: Miscellaneous garden notes and what-have-yous | Posted: Sun Aug 03, 2008 5:10 am

We are currently at my brother-in-law's house in Murfreesboro, TN. I brought some of the produce from our garden, because I knew my sister-in-law would appreciate it, being something of a gardener herself. I brought about 10 grape tomatoes, and 4 or 5 romas, along with two cucumbers. Tonight we had a lovely "veggie night" for dinner. It consisted of baby red potatoes, corn, asparagus, fried green tomatoes (I brought those too, because I couldn't wait to enjoy those tomatoes!), sliced cukes, and a delicious spinach and grape tomato salad.

I am trying to get the hubby to branch out on which veggies he will eat. I love them all, and I have to say I thoroughly enjoyed the veggie night tonight. I think it is nice every once in a while to have a nice simple meal with no meat to prepare. Somehow it seems like so much less of a hassle to just have fresh produce for dinner. And oh, so good for you!

Monster Cukes

Category: Miscellaneous garden notes and what-have-yous | Posted: Sun Jul 27, 2008 10:38 pm

Just a quick note...

I went outside this evening to start to trim some of the leaves off my tomato plants to alleviate some of the weight so that they are not taking over my whole garden and pulling their trellises out of the ground, only to find that I am growing the weirdest cucumbers I've ever seen.

I found two that were ready to come inside. The first was a HUGE cuke that seems to be from some alien planet (my husband's words were, "That's not a cucumber, that's a monster!"). The thing must be over a foot long! The second cuke was one that was up against the chicken wire make-shift fence that my husband put around the edge of the raised bed to keep the beagle out. This one is in a J shape, I guess from being pushed up against the side of the garden.

I wonder if any of the cucumbers I am growing will turn out normal...

Tomatoes: The bullies of the garden!

Category: What is with these silly tomatoes? | Posted: Thu Jul 24, 2008 3:22 pm

I am quite frustrated by my SIX tomato plants. They are growing so tall and are so heavy that they are actually pulling their trellises out of the ground and smashing my green beans! Why did I plant six tomato plants, you ask? Well, because my husband and I are very amateur gardeners with this being our first year with a garden. We planted four regular tomato plants, one roma plant because that is what we use to make our homemade marinara sauce, and one grape tomato plant because that is what I like on my salad. The funniest thing is, we have tomatoes coming out of our ears, and my husband doesn't even like tomatoes! I have to go out and push the trellises back into the ground each day, and make sure that the bully tomatoes and the cucumber vine are not encroaching on my entire garden. The green beans seem to be holding their own though; we ate the first of them for dinner last night and they were quite delicious. Now we know for next year: Not so many tomatoes, and get the cucumber plant its own planter with some sort of structure for the vine to wind itself around. Live and learn, right?
