Late last summer a co-worker kindly gave me a hosta. My first hosta and my first planting in the yard. I don’t know the name, but I believe it is in the gold hosta family. I hurriedly planted it before it died where there was a bare patch on the East Side of the house. I figured I could always move it later.

A week later my husband mowed it down. I was not pleased.

I assumed it would not come back, but to my utter amazement it arrived this spring looking healthy and strong. I was very happy. In honor of this momentous occasion, I decided that I would plant a hosta garden along the whole East Side of the house. I did my research and discovered that it was shady enough. I had a plan for my first yard improvement.

I admit I do have a tendency to be a procrastinator and I’ve no doubt that the transformation that I envision for my yard will be years in the making, but I certainly did not foresee the stumbling blocks I would face.

When I shared my plans for a fabulous hosta garden with my husband, he cautioned me about digging. Why? Were there gas lines? Was he secretly burying money for our retirement? No. Last November he buried by son’s dead guinea pig somewhere in my hosta oasis. The operative word here being “somewhere”. He can’t remember where exactly.

I was not to be discouraged. I found a small low-lying place in the ground and I am assuming (and keeping my fingers crossed) that this is poor little Coco’s final resting place. I placed a monument (a large rock) on the spot and I will, cautiously, carry on with phase one of Hosta Oasis.

This weekend I went out to the side of the house to make a preliminary plan and my heart dropped to my feet. Yes, you guessed it……..

My husband had once again "inadvertently" mowed down my hosta. Once again - I was not pleased.

Do you think my neighbors would find it odd if I placed a sign in the side yard that reads:

Mowers will be prosecuted

Exhibit A
