There used to be an ancient apple tree in this spot, but it died and came down in a storm, and I needed a cheap arbor for the wisteria vines to climb on. Then I remembered that I had 4 old very long pieces of rebar, so I made this arbor with them, and an old ring from a washing machine. Older washing machines had a double ring of wire with a zig zag pattern connecting the two. It was to keep the laundry from going out the top, I think. Anyway, it was just some of the junk laying around when I moved here. I made the rebar into 4 giant rough U shapes. It is surprisingly easy to bend. I put them into the ground upsidedown, and poked each end well into the ground. The weather had been very rainy, so the ground was very soft. [If it isnt rainy where you are, use a garden hose to soak it for a few hours.] I made kind of a box with them at the bottom end, and up top, I fastened that ring inside the top ends with old wire to hold them together. Then I had to tie the wisteria vines to the arbor and trim them a lot. Now they grow all over it freely, but I still have to prune them every year or less.
There is a peach tree limb in the foreground, and under the arbor is a large rose of sharon bush that I have not been able to dig out. The roots are too tangled with the wisteria, and other tree roots that are close by.
I have sedums, irises, daffodils, phlox and other flowers in this bed also. |
