I purchased some basil seed from Johnny's Seeds a few years ago. Actually, this seed batch I started this summer was from 2008. I have grown the regular 'Genovese' basil. It's good. But this batch is a hybrid F1 called 'Aroma2', which is a shorter Genovese, with way darker, glossy leaves, and an 'improved' aroma and taste. My basil is still tiny; it's going in the windowsill. So for now, I just wanted to know what others' experiences have been with these basil varieties. Thanks!
I have grown the old-fashioned, unimproved Genovese for years, and love it. I find it easy to grow, very prolific, and has a definite flavor without being overpowering (I even take some of the bigger leaves, spread them with cream cheese, and roll like a cigar for part of an appetizer tray.) I tried an "improved" variety once, and was disappointed. The taste was slightly bitter, and it died off about half-way through the season, while the Genovese was still going strong. Now, this is in Texas, and you aren't in the same climate, so take my experience with a grain of salt!
