Hi I am new to this forum, having found you via google search as I have been desperately trying to identify this moth (or butterfly?) which hatched in our garden. My children and I have looked in the moth and butterfly identification guide and nothing resembling it. I also spent a long while trawling the internet last night. Apologies if this is an obvious one, I just ran out of options on where to find information.

    Very similar to this one

It is a Garden Tiger moth. Used to be common, but is now in very serious decline.

That's a lovely clear photograph :) and yes they do look similar! I have just had another look and I *think* mine might be a Jersey Tiger?
Actually I think they both might be different variations of the same species?

They are both very nice. Now I may be adding to my tattoo, Palustris.

If my info is correct. Aren't these the type of moths that act like humming birds? The ones we have in Wisconsin are brown, cream and pink or a bright green like the hummers. Haven't seen one in my flower garden for years now. Those are great pic's.

The ones in Britain which act like Humming birds are Hummingbird hawk moths.
I have a picture of one somewhere.

Very pretty colors on the moth ...I have not noticed it flying around in my Wisconsin garden but I wish it would with those beautiful colors.... He looks battered ...I have noticed my butterflys seem to have a lot of torn wings this year...

I think the first pic is a newly emerged one. Hasn't unfurled completely.

You're right Mart it hasn't long emerged and has yet to pump up its wings. Definitely a Garden Tiger moth as Palustris says. You are very lucky to have it in your garden Jacabiton. Let's hope there are more!!
