I had a very nice tomato plant this year from a friend but I didn't save any of the seeds I ate the entire thing. So I took a cutting from the top and am trying to overwinter it. Does anyone else do this?

Yes,, that's how I get my fall tomatoes. If you take a cutting you will get the same tomato as the original. Saving seed only works if the original plant is an heirloom. Hybrids will not reproduce true to original and will just give bite size tomatoes. That said however,,many times they will make a ton of those tiny tomatoes. I had some that had nice tomatoes under snow.

Thank you for the information. I have some tomatoes that are still ripening I hope they are done before the snow flies. How many tomato plants do you have each year?

This past year was 82 plants. We have large gardens. I only root a few for fall since they are just for eating fresh. Spring tomatoes get canned or frozen.
