Ed the black spots are usually caused by the plant getting too much water and, perhaps, not enough light. Also bear in mind that plastic pots/glazed pots retain moisture more than unglazed terra cotta ones. You should only water it when the top inch or more of the soil is dry. Make sure the pot doesn't sit in a saucer of water either. You could also try re-potting your Aloe Vera using a cactus-succulent mix. Make sure to give your plant some sun too and keep it out of draughts.

    Hi, Ed!
We just wanted to say that we agree with Eileen that you may be overwatering your aloe plant. Because aloe vera is a succulent plant, you should only be watering it sparingly. We recommend that you transfer your plant to a cactus-succulent mix, as Eileen as already suggested, as well as watering it once or twice a month. As far as light requirements go, you'll want to place your aloe vera in an area that gets a good amount of indirect sunlight.
    Good luck!

Black spots could be scale insects. Are you able to add a pic of your plant?

Along with the above tips, if you think it is diseased or has pest, mix some neem oil with water and water the plant with it.

Try a pothos (my avatar picture). they are really easy and virtually impossible to kill.
