I am trying to grow litchi tomatoes from seeds. I am growing them under lights. I have sowed litchi seeds twice, kept the medium damp. I read Litchis need light in order to germinate, so for the second sowing I did not cover the seeds.....still no germination! Any ideas? Suggestions?

    Hi Mart,
Thank you for your reply. Litchi tomatoes are a tomato relative....not a true tomato. They are like a cross between a cherry tomato & a cherry or strawberry. Their other name is Morelle de Balbis. They grow 4-5 feet tall & sport thorns. A friend grew them last year & let me sample one. Delicious in a tart kind of way. Good for jams, sauces, etc. Apparently you need to grow 2 at least so they will cross pollinate. I thought I would try them this year as an experiment.

Since my above post, I have contacted the seed house to get help (Baker Heirloom Seeds). Litchis need 70 degree soil in order to germinate. I am now trying them with a heating pad on low. Hopefully I won't cook them!

Oh ! I had no clue about them. Hope they germinate for you. if you think it may get too warm just fold some newspaper and pu between the seeds and the pad. Mine sometimes seems hotter that the instructions say.
