Spinach glut

    image.jpg image.jpg the perpetual spinach on my allotment is huge and starting to send up flower spikes so I harvested a huge bag full and turned it into delicious, spicy sag alloo, an Indian inspired spinach and potato dish, cooked with my home grown leeks, garlic and chilli. It is delicious served as a side dish with curry, but is equally delicious just used as a spicy vegetable dish served with meat or fish.

    What is a perpetual spinach ? Or is it a perennial spinach ? I need some of that.
    Would have not been enough left for me to freeze.

    Sjoerd, yup, filled up three plastic takeaway type containers and popped them into the freezer.

    Mart, it is perpetual which is a tougher spinach, more like a chard. It doesn't produce the delicate, buttery leaves like other, normal spinach but it stands well all winter in the open, and even when it flowers, you just chop it down and it starts again, going on, and on, and on.

    Thanks frank, it is a good way of getting my lot to eat their greens.

    Is there a botanical name ? I will see if I can find it here. We have mild winters so it should do well here.

    Mart, it is referred to as spinach beet, beta vulgaris. Hope that helps.
