The kids decided, on the spur of the moment no less, that it was time to add a backsplash to the kitchen of their recently built new house. It was one of those lazy Saturday mornings, we're all hanging out in our jammies, Paige and Will, the kids, dogs and cats lounging around doing nothing in particular. Paige looks over at the kitchen and murmurs, almost to herself, something about a backsplash would be nice to have in there.

The next thing I know, before I could even blink, we're at Home Depot discussing the merits of various backsplash materials, (well, the kids are, *I* am in the plant section showing my grandson how pretty the flowers are.....no surprise there, right?)

Shopping for the backsplash tile, and while we're there I suggested we get mulch for the garden....shhhh, don't tell them I had an ulterior motive for coming along!

    And so it begins

Love this baby-wearing Mama! Having an infant sure wasn't going to stop my daughter from being in there pitching doing her share of the work!

They're getting there! (Note: The color of the backsplash is distorted by the under cabinet light. The true color, which is a lovely compliment to the granite, is what you see on the far left, above the sink area.

Not quite finished, (still needs a line of caulk) but functional and attractive..and again, the colors aren't true in the picture. The tile and the granite compliment each other perfectly! They did a good job for a couple of amateurs. :)

They did a great job and it looks wonderful!

I so need to do this. I am so tired of the cheap junk my BIL put in for us 20 years ago. I just am so leery of spending the money and deciding I don't like it.

Ronni the splashback tiles look really great. I've seen similar ones over here but never had the courage to buy and try them. After seeing your photographs I'll be giving them a second look.

Carolyn and Eileen, I was very surprised at how easily that tile went on. The kids are NOT handy as regards house renovation etc. Neither of them have any experience, and honestly not much interest either. Paige is too busy with the kids, and William, God love him, tries really hard but it's just not his thing. Give him code to work with and he's freaking brilliant! Or anything artsy. But this kind of stuff is not his forte.

Even so, it was entirely done in a weekend (minus some caulking that's needed to finish it up but you can't even tell, unless you get up very close) and that's INCLUDING the time it took to do the purchasing, plus a couple runs back to Home Depot, plus running after kids and dogs, making food, taking naps...the works. The tile comes in sheets, which go on a sheet at a time, except for the edges and areas around outlets etc.

The one thing that helped enormously was the neighbor's tile cutter...a small machine. If you're going to do something like this, rent one if you don't have one. If Will hadn't had the neighbor's, he'd have had to run back to Home Depot numerous times to get the cuts he needed.

Everything looks so nice...what a beautiful kitchen you have Ronni. We hired someone to do ours but mine blend in and I don't think anyone really notices them.
