We've spent the last 5 years slowly remodeling this old house, I think we saved the worst for last...the guest bathroom. Everything was torn out right down to the floor joists...except the alcove the sink vanity is in. The new sub floor is in and the new tub. I've painted the walls. Now we are waiting for the tub\shower walls to arrive and the new vanity light. Then we can lay new linoleum and install the loo and call this old house done! I'll post pictures when it is finished.

Oh yes please!! I'd love to see it 2ofus. Our 17th century cottage has been a long haul too but we're, slowly, getting there. Everything is just so expensive that we have to save up between jobs. The roof is done and the upstairs bedrooms. The living room is finished but we've yet to tackle the kitchen and bathroom.

Man, I do not envy you any at all. remodeling while you are living there is straining. I am glad for you that you are getting to the end of it though. We did our kitchen starting in Oct of '15 and then the bathroom immediately afterwards this past year and it took almost a year to get to the paint point.now we need to do the floor and I want to change the vanity... but that is $1700 for the 3 new units. *gulp*. I bought bonding primer for the floor and PAINTED the vinyl until we can get the floor done. I still have paint on my hands this morning form doing a mirror last night. Let us see your projects if you want to share. I know I like seeing what others have chosen to do.

That's amazing 2ofus! We have slowly been working on this old house for 13 years! Re-modeled the kitchen a few years back, have re-done both bathrooms (one is still not done!) and the upstairs bedrooms. We were going to do the main living room this winter but then needed a new furnace so that's been on hold. What I really, REALLY want is all new windows, but I'm starting to think that will have to wait for a lottery win :chuckle:
Love to see what you have done :)

We've slowly been renovating/redoing our home. The Christmas tree photos show the difference in the living room walls. The paneling was dark brown and made the whole room gloomy. We spackled over it, sealed the spackling and painted a creamy light yellow--we are no longer cave dwellers!
The kitchen pantry has sliding doors. The original doors suffered a "frosting" job that was sloppy--drips and missed spots. The doors also didn't like to stay in their tracks. My husband made door frames and inserted louvered panels, and I painted the whole thing off-white. Much nicer looking, the doors stay on tracks now, and I don't feel like retching every time I look at the pantry!

very nice transformation Jane. My inlaws will be eventually having to make some choices about their living situation... but they have a family room with dark walnut paneling... ugh! it is a dungeon. that is exactly what I think will be done with their paneling, it is horrible and they think it is just fine (gag!), when our son buys it from them.

Renos can be lots of work but the results when done can be spectacular :)

Carolyn, tell your son to remove a small bit of the paneling--usually there is a narrow strip near a window or door that can easily be removed and then replaced if necessary--and see what is behind it. He may just find wallboard that hasn't been taped and spackled, or he may find perfectly smooth walls that just need a few patches, sealing, and paint or wallpaper. By the way, textured wallpaper can hide a multitude of sins!

I doubt if there is drywall behind it. Until the in-laws actually have to make choices...not much will happen. But we will see when it happens what is behind there.

I wished we had taken pictures of the inside of the house when we bought it but I was afraid, if anyone saw it, we'd be committed to the loony bin for even thinking of remodeling instead of rebuilding! The first room to be remodeled was the kitchen as it was unusable. For 2 months my 'kitchen' was a card table with a crockpot and electric skillet. With the help of 1 very good carpenter, it took us 3 months to make it where we could say we were living in it instead of camping in it. Now, 5 years later, the last room is being done!
PS. It would have been done if the tub\shower surround we ordered hadn't arrived broken!
PSS, Jane, I really! like the doors your husband built. They are so much nicer than the old ones. Aren't talented husbands terrific!

2of us... We special ordered a bathtub and it came broken too. Someone dropped it. We didn't think to take off all the wrapping until the old tub was out and they were ready to take the new one in...BIG mistake. It took at least 6 weeks to get the next one. Grrrr.

2ofus, talented and hard-working husbands are a prize, and I've got one! He can build furniture, raised garden beds, garden tables, and do all sorts of repairs. We joked that when we moved into this place, a thief might break in, but after looking around, he/she would just leave a donation and go away. It's better now . . . .

You may add some small accessories in your guest bathroom to make it more beautiful.
