I bought blackberry seeds and since we do not have them here I do not know how to grow them. Some say they require long stratification (up to 3 months). Does anybody tried propagating them from seeds successfully? Please share your experience.

    Thanks

Oh goodness - here in Canada on the west coast blackberries are a plague! ;) They are very invasive and we can't seem to eradicate them and yearly it is a chore to cut them back, dig them up and do whatever you can to keep them from taking over the backyard! :)

Here they grow by runners and shoots. They seem to like rainforest type conditions (lots of wet and always to the cool side) and once they take hold they just grow grow grow and grow some more.

I've never heard of them growing from seed but am sure they somehow must. About my only suggestion would be to keep them moist (but am basing this on speculation not factual knowledge). New blackberry growth can appear late fall to late spring unless it gets super cold or super hot and late fall to late spring is when it is mostly likely apt to be raining and wet here.

Thanks Islandlife. Will try put them in the fridge mixed with moist peat moss for a month or so then get them out in spring. Will keep you posted.

Did you buy the seeds from a reputable seed seller? Seeds from berries grown in someone's backyard may not result in a berry you want especially if the seeds came from a hybrid or cultivar.
A month in the fridge isn't long enough, they need 6 months of cold to germinate....put them in now and plant them in the fall (not Spring) about September/October . They need cool temps so if you plant them just before the hottest part of the year they won't make it.
I don't know how much actual winter weather you get but wait until the temperatures start dropping to your normal winter level before planting. And then be sure to keep them well watered when you put them in the ground.

Thanks Toni. I bought them from amazon; I assume the seller is good. We do not get much winter (Zone 9-10) nor much rain; Winter starts December till February with temperature ranging from 4C to 15C.
Will put all the seed in the fridge. Will keep you posted.
