    Hi all,

I have been given a task. A very good friend's daughter will be getting married in early July next year. I have known this young woman since she was in diapers. I am very fond of her and her parents. She is a lovely person.

So this is my task: her mother has asked me to help her with her garden, to make it presentable for the wedding. The wedding ceremony is to be outside in early July. Her garden is at a lull at that point: peonies & iris have finished their bloom. To complicate matters, my friend wants flowers in a pink-blue-purple theme. That lets out the most obvious & most reliable of blooms: dayliiles, coreopsis, the heleniums.

We have discussed landscape roses ('The Fairy'). She already has several very nice stands of shasta daisies that bloom in early July. We have also discussed impatiens. I mentioned zinnias. She likes echinacea & already has one. It blooms for her in early July. I suggested maroon foliage plants to fill things out a bit, add a somber note to the frills of pink-blue-purple. (coral bells, ligularia)

Any ideas? Keep in mind my friend only has this fall, the spring & early summer for plants to get established. That lets out clematis, shrubs, etc.

Any ideas will be greatly appreciated!! I am overwhelmed....my friend is too. Any help will be appreciated.

PS: this is for a New England garden, full sun, zone 6A. Some areas of the garden are in shade, but I have plenty of hostas & ferns I can give her for those areas.

Check out Salvias, they come in two or three shades of purple, blue, white and red. I don't know when they will bloom in your area but you might be able to force them into blooming early by keeping them in a warm place for a few weeks. Lilac might bloom at that time in your area.

Daylilies and coreopsis do come in pinks. There's also pink salvia and dianthus plus many annuals are pink. A few that come to mind is pink alyssum, annual phlox and snapdragons that might bloom in time.

I was going to suggest Salvia 'May Night' for a nice splash of blue, shasta daisy, small pink Zinnia's, begonias, ageratum, alyssum

Thanks Netty. I like your suggestions, especially the idea of allyssum. She has a rock wall & it would be pretty spilling over the wall. Begonias, small pink zinnias, May Night, ageratum, yes I can see it.

Campanula portenschlagiana,..its a purple/blue colour,..apart from looking good in containers its great for climbing or cascading down a wall.

Purple Alyssum,..( Lobularia maritima 'Violet Queen' )

That's just two that could be bought in a pot and by the wedding day they would be multiplied.

    Hi Philip,

I have never grown C. portenschlagiana, only seen it in catalogs. I'll check it out. Does it have a long bloom period? Allysum is also a great idea for the wall, and inexpensive too.

How about dark pink pelargoniums (geraniums)?

I like it Petronius. They are annuals in our locale so should be easy to grow to decent size by late June. Thanks

Cayuga Morning, I am glad that you like the pink Pelargoniums.
Would a pink Knock Out rosebush work?

Yes Petronius. Good idea. I gave her a Rosa, Meiggili 'Peach Drift'. I have 2 of them myself & love them. Trouble is, my friend's yard is beset by munching deer & she does not protect stuff during the winter from their hungry appetites. I'll see how that Meigglili has fared come spring. I almost don't want to look. (Just kidding).
