When we were hiking in west Texas, I picked up some Retama seeds, brought them home, and planted them. A Retama is a desert tree with small leaves, lots of thorns, and pretty yellow blooms after a rain. The tree has green limbs, so even if during a drought the leaves fall, the tree can still photosynthesize! We had six Retamas grow from the seeds and I brought one with us when we moved here. It has adapted to our blackland prairie soil, and to having more moisture than it did in west Texas. Here is our Retama in the corner of the pasture, and a close-up of its blooms. Notice the small but very sharp thorns on the limbs--they sure discourage grazing!
Very nice even at a distance,..even more beautiful when you see the red and yellow bloom,..nice to know you gave that tree a bit of luxury with more richer soil and water than what it was used to.
love the flower colours and what a nice adaptation that tree has with the green bark. Those thorns look ouchy!
