Well friends I come again. This plant I bought and it's causing me problems. It doesn't like hot weather and not sure what to do. When I bought it it had yellow blooms, but I think its dying. When I keep it inside it seems to grow better. Any idea what it is? Ed, that looks like Gerbera jamesonii (Gerber Daisy, Barberton Daisy) They will take either full or part sun. What makes you think it is dying? It looks very healthy to me. They do not bloom constantly so there will be some times when it has no buds or blooms but yours has at least two buds on it. When you keep it inside the growth is because it is trying to reach the sunlight and that will make it very leggy and the blooms will not last as long as they will when outside. I have an orange one out front in our 100+ temps that is loving it, so I don't think the heat will bother it.
I replanted the plant cause it was pot bound. If I leave it out with the afternoon sun it starts to droop. The picture I sent in was after the plant spent some time inside with a little sun but some A/C. The plant is now outside since the sun went down. Thanks for your help and maybe I'll get another thought. sleep cool ed
It will droop when it's outside in the afternoon because it has not had a chance to acclimate to the sun and heat since it spends part of it's day in the house. If you want to alternate between inside and out, then put it in the shade in the afternoon but leave it out for the morning sun.
Toni: The plant is outside now and doing well. In the afternoon I either try to hide it from sun as I get FULL sun from right after noon till the sun sets. Or I will bring it inside where its cooler. Does this plant need a lot of water because my moisture shows the top of the pot is moist but lower portion is dry. Thanks for your help and sleep cool. Ed
Usually if the top soil is moist and the bottom is dry that means not enough water. The roots are down near the bottom of the pot, watering a little on the top when the soil feels dry doesn't reach the roots and the top of the soil will be dry most of the time because of evaporation. Sticking your finger down into the soil or using the moisture meter will tell you what's going on down in the root zone. If you can, set the plant in the sink and gently water until the water runs out the drain holes on the bottom. Let the rest of the excess water drain out before putting it back in place. If the pot has a drain tray attached make sure the tray is empty after a good watering, they should not sit in water. Don't re-pot it very often, their roots are deep and they do not tolerate re-potting very well. If you feel you have to re-pot move it to a deeper pot not just a wider one.
