Last year the planted crocus from the previous fall enjoyed the spring air and sunshine. Till the midnight muncher dined on about 50 of the tender treats. So last fall incased in chicken wire new bulbs were planted with the promise of new flowers this spring. True to their contract the new crocus colored the spring flower beds with purple and white blooms. But from the shadows of darkness in the dead of night another creature had different ideas. Not to be thwarted by the plans of man, nimble fingers pushed and pried at the steel cocoon. With just enough space between the wire the muncher lifted the prize out and again dined on the fruits of blossoms past. *#@$%……*^%$#@ muncher. Next year the steel Cocoon will be different. In the mean time other crocus try to hide in the nighttime shadows hoping the muncher will pass them by.

The midnight muncher(raccoon) is no stranger to our garden fare.
The next planting will have a finer mesh wire. For years all crocus were O.K. Lately one raccoon likes crocus. :-(

Squirrels love em! I have never heard of raccoons eating them though!

I had no idea that raccoons would do this....live and learn.

This year as well as last the activity happens in the nighttime hours when most respectable squirrels would be asleep. I might layout a sand trap and have footprints to back up my suspicions that it is a raccoon. It takes nimble fingers to maneuver the crocus between the chicken wire. I can't imaging a squirrel with that much dexterity.
