    Hello Everyone,
My daughter gave us a big Bird Of paradise plant. I have transplanted it to a much bigger pot and now have it indoors because of the cold weather. We have it by a window so it gets indirect sunlight. But, the big leaves are starting to "tear'. Can anyone tell me what kind of care this thing needs? Some say to water it every few days some say not to water it so often. Thanks for any help.

Hi! I'm not sure if you meant tear as to become torn or tear as to drip liquid? But generally, tropical plants can use/need more sun during the short, less intense days of winter than summer when kept in the captivity of a pot at higher latutides. Water so that all soil is re-moistened before soil becomes dry enough that your plant wilts but don't keep it soggy. The speed at which it dries would depend on how quickly the plant processes the moisture, combined with evaporation, both of which are affected by temperature, humidity, air movement, the type/texture of the soil, size and type of pot.

    purpleinopp,
Thank you very much for the reply. I meant tear like in to become torn. All the big leaves are like that now. According to your reply I may have been watering it too much. I will cut back on my watering. Again, thank you very much.

Happy to suggest. Do you know which species you have? There are about 5 species in Strelitzia genus, if memory serves.

What a beautiful plant! I have no idea how to sort Strelitzias but it seems like they usually have some splits/tears in their leaves. It looks happy & perky to me.
