I know this sounds silly, but I am still going to ask. I wash a lot of cleaning cloths and workshop cloths in my clothes washer. I've noticed that the tub has slight brown bands at the water level. I tried doing a bleach rinse with no noticeable effect.
How do I clean the inside of my clothes washer?

Ideally I would ask the cleaning lady to clean the washer tub....but that is probably not an option ;) Will the lines scrub off? Maybe use the bleach directly on them to see if that works, it's pretty diluted in the tub full of water.
If they won't rub off, you might not have anything to worry about except the aesthetics of them being there instead of a pristine washer tub.

It's greasy buildup. Use 409 or Fantastic. Use a well wrung out wet rag, spray a bunch of the degreaser into it, then rub vigorously. It should come off fairly easily.

Yes, Toni, having the "cleaning lady" (me:() scrub directly with bleach may do it. If not, I'll try 409 and rub vigorously (early in the morning when my vigor is vigorous).
Our clothing comes out clean, as do the table and bath linens. I just feel that a washing machine tub ought to be pristine. If it isn't, I can live with it!

It's like a bathtub ring. You can get a washing machine cleaner...you run it through a wash. I have it but hate to put it down into my septic tank...

Netty makes me remember my mom used to add either white vinegar or baking soda on a rinse cycle.

Baking soda on a wet terry cloth towel should work fine !! Then run a cycle on hot with no clothes but do add the soap !!

My washing machine now is pristine! I did the three cups of vinegar after filling the tub with hot water, let it set for 30 minutes or so, then ran it through. I followed up on under the rim with the baking soda scrub, then rinsed thoroughly.
Thank you all for the help!
