I had been waiting for this cucumber to mature the first one from my plant. I had been checking on it everyday except yesterday because it was raining. This evening I was shocked to see this very ugly thing on it.

It looks like only one end of it is attached to the cucumber and it had no life because no movement was detected from it.

    Any idea?

That appears to be the larvae of a Pickleworm caterpillar. Check all your cucumbers for tiny holes and head to your local garden center to get Bt to treat the plants. The eggs are injected into the cucumber by a night flying Moth, they grow inside eating the cucumber then pop out to finish pupating.

Yes Ronni it is very repulsive looking and I don't think if it is oozing out of the cucumber.

Toni, it could be a Pickleworm caterpillar but it was lifeless. Anyway I just checked the other 3 remaining cucumbers with my glasses on and I think I did not see any tiny holes :fingerscrossed:. Is Bt Bacillus thuringiensis? This is the first time I learned about it, thanks Toni, I'll ask my seed supplier about it when I go there next.

Islandlife, that is exactly my intention - FAST :D

Birds will sometimes eat Caterpillar larvae, maybe there is a little helper in the garden. I have to really watch the caterpillars that show up on my Fennel and other host plants...one day they are there as tiny larvae and the next they are gone and one of the birds has a big smile on his/her face. :(
Yes Bt is Bacillus thuringiensis......I have mainly just heard it as Bt since that second word is a tongue twister to say.

Oh man. That is a bummer...the first cucumber and that happens..much like the first tomato to me. Whatever it is/was is nasty! Hopefully it hasn't gotten to anything else!

Yes I've had those before. It is from a critter digging into your cucumber. The slime is its waste / liquid from the cucumber. It's gross and horrible that it ruins the whole thing. I've used neem since and haven't had that problem again.

That guy was in there for a while. It starts as a little hole. Then a small drip, then the gel starts building up.

Thanks Tacticalgardener, I still like to know what it actually is and neem is very very expensive here.
