I'm waking up to heavy frost and, last week heavy dusting of snow. The ground is starting to freeze so I went out yesterday and put a thin cover of finely chopped leaves around the plants for some protection against frost heaves. I've read so many different directions on-line about how deep to cover the plants that it is confusing. So I'm asking how much mulch do you put on plants like Heuchera and Iris, and other plants that the leaves do not totally die back. I'm afraid I'll smother them.
In your area I would go with Sjoerd's measure...6-9 inches. Down here I can get away with about 3 inches since our winters are typically mild by comparison.
Thank you for the replies. I have put about 3 inches around all the plants but that was all the chopped leaves I had. Maybe I can use some straw to finish the extra inches I need.
No heavy frost here but -1C killed off my row of baby Begonias. No frost last night. 4C at the moment. K
