I have just a few purple coneflower plants and I'd really like more :-D
Last fall I scattered the loose seeds around the garden, but I didn't get ONE plant :'( My neighbor said her friend buries the whole flower/seed head and swears it works great in getting new plants.

Has anyone tried doing it this way?

    Thanks for any help :stew1:

Maybe you just need to start with a plant and watch the seedlings sprout from seeds the birds didn't eat? Well, maybe not the best idea, but that is how I got most of my plants (and dividing plants after a year or two). Some seeds sprouted and are coming up between the bricks in my patio. :-? Yes, I left them and am enjoying their blooms. If you need more seeds PM me. I am sure someone who is more knowledgable will be able to give you a much better answer. ;)

if you have a lot of seeds - and these coneflowers DO HAVE a lot of seeds, try different methods.
directly in the ground around their mother, in a pot (now, in the fall) and save some for early spring.

I agree with Calin... start them in a pot. That way you know they "took" and didn't get eaten by birds... or blown away.

I have no problems getting new Coneflowers to grow. I do it the same way your friend does...stick them in the ground and cover them up.

    Thank you all!

Jewell, I will have plenty of seeds soon (if the bird don't eat them all) but thank you for your very nice offer :-D I would be more than thrilled to get some coneflower's between the stones on my patio 8)
Ok, I will again try some seeds around the mother plants, and some in a pot.
It's getting cool here now, so I hope if anythings going to pop up in the pot, it happens in a hurry so I can get them in the garden.
I'll also try a couple of whole seed heads. Something has to come up :-D

    Thanks again!
