Doesn't anyone have an idea of what this plant is? It's my friends and I can't get a better pic if it.
Possibly a Ligustrum vulgare (Wild Privet) Without being able to see the flowers close up I don't know for sure. Does it have a fragrance? Does it bloom only in Spring?
As Toni says it's hard to tell from your phototgraph but here are a few other suggestions as to what it might be; Dogwood? Spirea? Choica? or maybe Firethorn?
Barb, It looks like it is in the dogwood family. Can you see how the flowers and leaves are in layers? that is very characteristic of dogwood. But we relly need a clearer photo to see the flowers or if you can go look at it does it have a four part flower (which it technically is a bract not a flower), you can gently tear the leaves in two but do it slowly and you can see threads stretching from one part to the other. The leaves should also be opposite on the branch. The bark should be shiny smooth. People used to use it to brush their teeth by chewing on a small branch "shredding" the fibers and cleaning their teeth at the same time...
Click on the blue links to see photos of these plants, maybe one of them is yours. Cornus florida (Flowering Dogwood, State Tree of Missouri, State Tree of Virginia) Cornus alba 'Sibirica' (Red-barked Dogwood) Cornus canadensis (Bunchberry, Creeping Dogwood) Spiraea prunifolia (Bridalwreath) Firethorn is also Pyracantha but we don't have photos of it in our database. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pyracantha Tragacantha choica is also not in our database and I haven't found a photo of it anywhere.
Barb in Pa is so very confused......Maybe my friend can take a better pic of it. I will email here again.
Really a lovely plant. I have often admired them in other people's yards this time of year. Wish I had room.....sigh
Well, I wasn't much help. as I looked and looked at dogwoods i couldn't find anything that looked just like yours. I am glad you found out what it is.
