I was so thrilled this past August to once again have my Mother In-laws tongue bloom. I usually only had on or two blossom stalks. But this year I had at least 6. The blossoms smell like Juicy Fruit gum and are quite unusual DSCN7278.JPG DSCN7276.JPG .
I wonder how many of you remember that Gum?

I remember that gum well Tooty!! It literally made your mouth water when you chewed it.

Your Mother-in-law's tongue is beautiful. I've never seen one in bloom here.

My Mother in Laws tongue just bloomed too, but I don't remember a scent. I'll have to pay more attention next time ... I love juicy fruit gum!

So glad to here that others have had them bloom. Mine is quite pot bound and somewhat neglected. Maybe that is one key to getting them to bloom. In the winter I put it in an east facing window and in the summer it is out on my front porch which faces west.

I remember the gum and Wrigley's Spearmint. Long time ago!
So that plant is Mother in Law's Tongue? The blossoms are very pretty.

I have one in a huge pot in the living room that flowers regularly. Flowers are not showy and never last but faithfully once a year they'll sprout out.

Islandlife, we have no window sills and plants inside don't fare well.
Therefore, I enjoy them during warm months.

@Growingpains What is real interesting about mine - bought it already big (5 gallon size pot) at Home Depot on a $9.99 sale. It hasn't really grown taller with the exception of one lone leaf that reached 6' prior to me cutting it off. I've got it in the corner of the living room where it sits in a north window. Never gets sun and even the window it is in has a huge overhang so why this plant is so thrilled to bloom every year is beyond me. I have 3 others and they've never bloomed at all. They don't grow, they don't die - they're ironclad green ;) ;)

@Growingpains I've seen this plant growing out in the open in Mexico with full sun exposure to growing in offices with totally artificial light and in homes in very low light conditions. It seems to me to be one the totally iron clad failure proof plants going.

Much as I love plants, this is one I really don't care to grow. To each their own.
