We harvested our 3 1/2 by 3 1/2 foot square (1.066 x 1.066 meters) carrot patch today and was really pleased. Here is a picture of our harvest, just pulled and then cleaned and sliced.
Wonderful amount of carrots! Do you freeze or can? We freeze our extras to use in stews or to mix with green veggies. We have a bigger plot than yours, but not a bigger harvest.
Way cool harvest! I've been pulling my carrots for some time now as the grandkids just munch them like candy.
Lovely 2ofus, once I had a 2 X 2 feet plot and I didn't get a decent carrot at all! I guess the climate is just not right here for carrots.
I was really surprised we had that many and that they were nice and straight. We've had a real problem with nematodes causing twisted, multiple legged carrots but this year they didn't seem as active. We froze 48 two cup portions.
2ofus....is it nematode that cause the multiple stems? That is how my carrots are. I assumed I had not prepared the soil deep enough or loose enough. BTW your carrot harvest is beautiful!!!!! And bountiful!!!!
CM, that's what the County Extension Office said was wrong with ours. We just move our carrot planting to different areas each year to keep them from concentrating in one area.
We have used French marigolds to repel nematodes. Now, we've never had a problem with nematodes in our root vegetables, so I can't say if it is just good luck or the marigolds, but the flowers do add a certain festive touch to the carrot fronds, potato leaves, and turnip greens. We just sprinkle a few marigold seeds along the row where the root veggies are planted, and hope for the best!
MG, I think you were the one that helped me find out what was wrong with my carrots a year or two ago. Moving them to a different spot each year seems to help plus the marigolds.
I really hope I was the one that helped, but there are so many great and helpful gardeners here, I may have just been one of the herd!
