When we bought our house we found this awesome rose bush growing at the side of the garage. We don't know what kind it is. It has grown wild while we concentrated on indoor house renovation. I want to cut it back this Spring but it is full of buds now. Do I have to wait till Fall or next Spring to prune and cut it back? How much should it be cut back? Can anyone identify it? Thanks/

    What it looks like now

Wait to prune until after it blooms, and then don't "whack" it, just cut back about one-third. It looks like a nice rose, but it does need some care!
I see you are in Ohio, so the optimum time to prune roses is in early spring--when the little red bumps that will become leaves appear. I'm just guessing, but that is probably in March. That is when you can give it a serious haircut and remove central canes to improve air circulation.
When it blooms, take a close-up photo of a blossom and some of the leaves. We may be able to identify it for you.

Thank you so much! Yes, she needs a LOT of care. She's very hardy though, living without any attention for probably many years so we want to help her thrive now.

I'll take close up pics when she blooms and follow your advice on pruning.

Hey Gran--that looks like a fab rose. It actually looks far too chic to let it go wandering across your lawn. I would suggest a pruning and a trellis.

Sorry I cannot identify it for you--there are a number of red roses with yellow centres. It is a real looker though.

I agree Sjoerd, she needs a good hair cut and a lot of love. Now that we're done with the major house reno we can pay her the attention she needs.

That is a really attractive rose. Does it have a rosy fragrance?

Oh meid, that is great then.

BTW--did you feed it in january or so? I am not really sure about your climate there, but I suspect that you could just get away with pruning your lovely rose.

Do you do anything special for that rose normally, or do you just let it do its thing, so to speak?

We've been in this house for three years now and were concentrating on major house renovation so have not taken care of our beautiful rose bush except the first spring we were here when I gave her a nice trim before any leaves opened. Haven't touched her since. Now that we can pay better attention to her I want make sure to do it correctly.

I am really interested in seeing your end result, for as I said--it has a striking colour.

I will be sure to post pics. I will probably have some questions when I'm ready to trim her again after it blooms.

You might get lucky if you dig around the dirt. I was cleaning out the front bed and came across the metal tag that came with the rose when it was purchased! I put it in a very safe place, so safe that I can't find it now :(
