I just bought a sad little clematis from WalMart. It was pretty dried up, just three green vines and probably 10-12 leaves. I have it soaking in water right now. I have read shade to partial shade, and I have read full sun to partial shade. Which is best? I read also, to keep the roots cool. Can I do that with mulch?

Mine are in full sun but with the roots shaded. I use Alyssum and Chrysanthemum to shade the roots in two pots, the other two are planted among other perennials that shade the roots when the sun heats up in early summer.

Until it's healthy looking I would keep it in a pot in shade, especially afternoon shade so it has a chance to recover, strengthen it's root system without having the stress of being toasted too. ;)

I see you are in Texas, so here in Florida it shouldn't get any hotter right? Thanks for the tip about keeping it in the shade for now. That was cute! Do you think I can keep the roots cool enough with mulch?
