Today we received about 12 inches of very wet snow which caused two of the main branches of my beautiful Japanese maple to break from the main trunk.
    What shall I do?

Depending on what the tree looks like now, I would, for the time being, take a pruning saw or pruners (which ever is appropriate for the job) and trim up the break on each limb and let it go until spring. then you will need to shape up the tree so that it isn't so noticeable. You may need to prune back some of the other branches quite a bit to even up the appearance of the tree.

post a picture and let us see what it looks like. that may help us tell you what to do. Sometimes breaks are not as bad as we, at first, think they are.

Prune as carolyn directs. Japan maple buds back well. The tree will carry on.
