That was a silly way to entitle this thread, wasn't it. Yes indeed it was; but I wanted to show you guys these impressive beans. I went out to the lottie today to harvest again. The Runner bean 'Enorma' are now beginning to produce. They must have been developed to be used for competitions, for they were all just as straight as a poker and delightful to pick. They really are enormous (more than 12 inches), as you can see. Tonight we had German beefsteak, with our own beans, spuds and lettuce. The bride wondered which of the beans we should eat...and I said, "I'll just take beans of all three sorts, slice them at jaunty angles and call them "trois haricots vert"---and we can imagine that we are eating at some chic restaurant.
You were eating at a chic restaurant--not many restaurants could serve such fresh and gorgeous vegetables as you have at your table.
We have a farmer's market here in town on Saturday's and we go get vegetables every Saturday. We eat salad every day for our evening meal. Not having a space for a garden doesn't keep us for enjoying our vegetables and fresh fruit. dooley
It is so big that you wouldn't need many to make a meal! What were the other beans? I am trying Roma beans this year. I've always grown Blue lake as they produce so much for canning, but I love the taste of Roma. I hope they produce well also.
Thank you JANE-- I am crazy about beans. Thanks KK-- You are right about that, mate. They are so tasty. ISLAND--It truly is phenomenal. I have never grown these before, so I wanted to try them. As I said, I believe that they were developed for showing...but the taste is good as well. 2OF-- Yes, they are great for putting up. The other bean sorts are--"Rakker" and "Spekboonen". I like trying different types of beans, but my fav is the Rakker. I am always open to trying new sorts--who knows what flavours I will discover. NETTY--They are truly amazing. They are attractive when you see a bunch of them hanging together on a truss. Very impressive.
Hey there, GROWING-- The name is: Runner bean 'Enorma' Phaseolus coccineus. http://www.thompson-morgan.com/vegetables/vegetable-seeds/pea-and-bean-seeds/runner-bean-enorma/38TM RADDANG-- These are a hybrid bean that came out of the UK. I am not so concerned with the length actually, but was actually trialing it for the flavour primarily-- so far, so good with eating them fresh. I was also interested to see how much a plant would produce, and that is adequate. The third aspect will be cooking them after having been frozen for a few months.
I checked the site and learned that the seeds are sold only in the UK. Guess it might be too costly a trip just to purchase a few bean seeds.
Chortle...yeah, that would be expensive...but Thompson and Morgan has a webshop in the U.S. I think. Aside from that, I buy seeds from them every year and they ship to my country, perhaps you could investigate and try. Aside from this option, there may be seed dealers in the us that sells them. Don't give up too soon, meid.
Truely awesome beans Sjoerd: I was'nt sure if to look in the thread or not...kidding.. Hope you enjoyed them. K
Ha, ha, ha...you are a brave soul. Kate. Glad you did look-in though. They were great eating. I picked quite a few more today and will process them tomorrow. I am reaching my bean limit now.
