A friend of mine is moving and asked me to adopt this plant of her's. Hubby called it a "corn plant"... but it reminds me of some sort of palm. Right now it's about 2 feet tall. Palm-like leaves/fronds. And the trunk is woody. Any clue as to what it is so I know how to take care of it? Thanks in advance! unknown ( photo / image / picture from cherylad's Garden )
It does look like a corn plant Dracaena fragans...or another species of Dracaena but I don't know which one specifically.
Another plant to check out is the cabbage tree. Your photo looks like a tree/plant that I got several years ago. At first it was small and someone had labeled it a yucca. Eventually it grew into a tree and I found out it was a "cabbage tree" Cordyline australis. Here it freezes to the base some years, but comes back with multiple stems if the roots are killed. Great patio plant. Happy gardening
Geez.... it has characteristics of all of the suggestions. Knowing where it came from, I'm guessing it will be something that's a common houseplant. Thanks for the suggestions... I'll look into each one.
Cal & Eileen... I saw one identical to the one that I have in "that store" today... it's definitely a Yucca. Variety still unknown... but at least I know what to call it now... except for "Joyce" the friend that gave it to me.
I have a small unidentified plant that my Mom had for around 30 years, she and her 4 girl friends bought one plant that had babies in the pot so they divided it up and named them all George. Some day I guess I will get a photo posted to see what name it was born with...but it will forever be George as far as I'm concerned.
I get ALOT of my plants from family or friends. I really do try to find out the "real" name of them... but when I talk to or refer to them, I call them by their "given" name... whoever it came from. Hubby is used to it and does the same thing... but by brother looks at me like I'm totally nuts when I refer to a plant as "Aunt Myrtle, Aunt Rosalie, Ms. Loving, Juanita, Jim, David, etc.
