Randy just sent me the same photo. Apparently the Weasel was intent on having the bird for lunch. Right after taking the photo the Woodpecker landed, squawking in pain and fighting for it's life. The Weasel caught sight of the photographer and ran off, probably the only thing that save the Woodpeckers life.

That may explain the pained look in the woodpecker's eyes. Poor thing.

To be in the right place at the right time is amazing. Great photo.

How amazing! Not only was the photographer lucky to be in the right place at the right time but how lucky for the woodpecker that he was there!

Laura just sent me the link a little while ago. Totally fantastic photograph!! I'm so glad the woodpecker managed to get away and, hopefully, uninjured.

So glad that bird survived. Weasels are pretty vicious little critters.
