Just found a bag of 20-20-20 fertilizer in hubbys shed. It's hard as concrete and very old. If I break it up can I use it in my compost barrel? If not what should I do with it? Thanks Donna moderator's note: added a more descriptive title to topic moderator's note: moved topic to more appropriate forum
I personally would NOT put it in the compost. If you can break it up fine enough broad cast it sparsely over the lawn to get rid of it.
Because most fertilizer is designed to be evenly distributed, you can not guarantee to attain the correct particle size just by breaking it into smaller pieces. Instead, I would dissolve the fertilizer in water and dispense the fertilizer as a liquid to assure a more even distribution, eliminating the possibility of fertilizer burn. Putting it in a compost would add an unknown to the distribution equation, eliminating your control over disbursement. Jerry
I like the water added solution. Goodness it sounds like I was making a joke. I wasn't. Disolved fertilizer will be as good as its ever going to be, and can be spread around more parsimoniously. I'm cheap too.
