I live in southern BC Canada. I have several yews growing as a hedge around a power box in my yard.
the plants were first planted in 1995 and have grown a nice size but I keep them trimmed to about 4'.

they are on west side of house and it gets quite hot heat but have underground irrigation and they have survived great up til last year.
actually it is only each side of two of them where a few branches dried up and died off. don't know what happened and it occurred in summer. I cut back the dead branches and i now have a gap there.

I have found another plant exactly the same type and want to plant it in between to fill the gap.

i have moved the decorator rock, cut back the landscaping fabric only to find a lot of small roots.

my question is...can i cut thru these roots to dig a hole to plant the new yew without killing the yews on either side.
