Young shrub w/small, smooth green leaf & "bark-like" ( photo / image / picture from K's Garden ) ( photo / image / picture from K's Garden ) Young shrub with small, smooth green leaves and "bark-like" branches. I never knew what this was but I have five of them in the garden. All died down during this past winter. All but one are coming back. I will cut off the dead branches, but left them for now, in hopes it would be easier to identify if left intact. Well, don't know too much as its very young. Small (maybe the size of a guitar pick, or slightly larger) leaves. Green, shiny, smooth, and on the thicker side. When it was healthy it stood about 1 ½ ft tall. Branches seem to be rough and bark-like. I can't remember if it was like that when it was healthy, or if it is a cause of the freeze. I thank you for your help. ~K
Looks like an Raphiolepis indica - Indian Hawthorne to me. I'll take a closer look at the one I have out front tomorrow for comparison.
Thanks Toni, Have you had a chance to look at yours for comparison? When checking out google images of "Raphiolepis indica - Indian Hawthorne" it looks very close. The branches and leaf shape and size seem to be correct. Although in the pictures some seem to have rounded leafs and others seem to have jagged leafs. As i recall before it died down, while it was bigger the leafs were always smooth not jagged. Also, from the picture i see, they seem to bloom berries of some type, which i don't recall mine ever doing that, so i'm a little thrown off. I guess i may have to wait till they mature. Thanks, ~K
Thanks Cherylad, But i dont think its a Magnolia. From the pictures i can find the leafs and branches are not right. I do appreciate your help. Thanks, ~K
Oh my, i was looking through my pictures and i found a distant picture from last year of one of these plants while it had a bloom on it. Now maybe it can be identified a lot easier. Sorry for both of them being blurry. I had to cut it out of the background of the original picture. The second is a bit more zoomed-in. Hello, Just checking in to see if anybody could help me identify this plant via the pictures I posted with the flowers shown? Thanks, ~K
Hi there, Sorry I didn't get back into this discussion. I would say that it is not an Indian Hawthorne, those blooms are totally different. Hmmmm, I will have to do some surfing to see what I can find.
Looks like a type of azalea we have here in the south. Variety,, I don`t know, there are many different types. You might check them out.
That's strange I posted a reply to this topic but it seems to have disapeared. :-? It looks very like an azalea to me too K but, like Mart, I don't know which one. Here is a website that may help you to ID yours. http://singtree.com/Azalea.cfm
