a daily check in; creating a new garden

Divide & dig

Category: daily chores | Posted: Wed Apr 19, 2006 2:23 pm

Finally, a day to get outside with no other commitments! My favorite kind of day......... Have a load of laundry ready to hang on my brand new clothesline too.

I have a couple buckets and several boxes full of plants from my moms..........all sitting in the shade, waiting to see where they get to live here at the new place. I've only got a smallish place cleared that will work for her offerings.........as she has mostly shade & I have mostly full sun. But, I should end up with a garden by this afternoon, instead of a patch of dirt!

Mostly native things........oregon grape, holly, a couple firs, and then a bucket full of items from her rockery garden. Free plants, my absolute favorite.

Mom shared a story about her mom........I told her thank you for the plants as I was leaving & she said her mom said you never say thank you for plants from someone. Grandma said that plants you sneak a slip from will grow better!! Who knew my Grandma was such a sneaky lady?? :) She did have a way with flower gardens! (maybe that's because she "lifted" all her starts?)

Off to my day........enjoying a balmy 43 degrees already at 7AM, supposed to get to 61 today!! Good gardening to everyone!

no gardening today

Category: daily chores | Posted: Tue Apr 18, 2006 2:14 pm

Off to a meeting today..........sunny & I'm not going to be in my garden!

Hopeful I'll have the van full of plants when I return this afternoon. Weather report is good for the next couple days, so I should be able to get everything all tucked into a new home here before it pours again.

My acorn squash sprouts are almost all coming up! Success. Some are 3" tall already. Soon they will be the same size I used to buy at the nurseries. Too fun! I searched around last night for other containers to start some other items....can't even remember what all I've got for this season. Bringing in a table this afternoon, to set up my mini greenhouse event inside. No point in letting the squash get a head start!!

It's been so fun to read about others gardens. I am insanely jealous of established gardens, since I'm hacking away here, having to dig out for any sort of bed. I miss my other yard!!! By now I would be gathering armfuls of flowers to bring indoors. The other yard was definately at it's peak in May.... My new yard, has a couple rhodies that haven't bloomed yet. Oh, let's not forget the teensy bunch of lily of the valley that have bloomed this week....one little sprout with flowers!!!!

sleet, hail, sun & rainbows

Category: weather report | Posted: Tue Apr 18, 2006 1:08 am

well, we've had it all this Easter weekend. I have never seen this variety all together. Power outages from electrical storms on Sat, gray, gloomy and WET on Easter Sunday. Today, we're just at the rain & sun mix, thus the rainbow..........hopefully, a sign of things to come for a few days.

I did sneak out between showers today and put some rose food on a rescued rose garden here at the new place. Since I'm gardening on a budget (what budget? I'm gardening for free here this season), I picked up the box of plant food from our local freecycle group. Hope these roses appreciate my attention. They were almost ignored when I inherited them in Oct. I waited all winter, then cut them back, now they are leafing out all over. Just need to get in the garden with my clippers & cut out the dead canes...........I'm so new to roses, I wasn't sure what WAS dead when I was trimming them back. Now it is obvious, even to me!!

Re planted the plants the kittens had pulled up when I was gone over the week end. I don't know how to cat proof my plants, but I need to investigate something. I'm so grateful I'm not paying for these plants!!!! I would string the kitties up if I had money invested in these new additions. As it is, I just keep re planting things.... Frustrating.

My acorn squash seeds are almost 75% up now. Oddly, no sprouts in 2 containers of seeds I planted. Interesting experiment here.......maybe they are just taking their time?? If all these get to the garden & actually grow...........I'm already double the usual plants I have put in. Progress!!

Watching the cuttings from hydrangeas and a mystery shrub I put in..........all doing well. Another 4 or 5 years & I'll have actual plants!! :) Good thing I'm patient! (and have a sense of humor)

Hope to be bringing more free plants home from a meeting tomorrow..........I'm taking empty boxes & buckets so I can raid my moms garden. Many native forest type plants there and I've got one shade garden just waiting for plants!

finally, a sprout

Category: it's growing | Posted: Fri Apr 14, 2006 3:09 pm

I see sprouts this morning in a couple of my pots of seeds I started. I had to do some gardening & since I can't get outside to do any big projects yet, (due to weather)..........I started some acorn squash seeds indoors.

Each year I plant the veggie garden, I use many plants from the nurseries, as our growing season is just too short. My previous house had such large overhangs, I didn't get much light indoors, so didn't even thing of starting seeds inside. No greenhouse, so I relied on the starts. No matter how early or often I went shopping, I could not find a bunch of acorn squash plants. I really couldn't find many plants at all.....

So, this year, with windows full of light (as much light as we get in WA state on a cloudy, rainy day) I began to expand my garden by using my own starts. I think we've got a better chance at enough acorn squash this year. They have turned out to be one of my favorite veggies. Versitile, keepers......fun & easy to grow.

Now that my little experiment worked, I'll need to start some more seeds today. I have received an order so I've got plenty to work with. Also have some flower seeds I collected from my old gardens to start here this season, almost to a point I can scatter them in beds outdoors.

Definately have the garden bug bad here........itching to get outside, but another damp, grey day here........and today we've got gusty wind to add to the mix.

another dismal day

Category: daily chores | Posted: Thu Apr 13, 2006 2:25 pm

No chores scheduled today.......the garden is going to begin to float. Weather report declared today as "dismal". Looks like November!

I did cultivate the front garden bed this AM as I was waiting with my kiddo for the school bus. Glad no one can see in my yard. There I am in my robe with my forked hoe.......gardening away. There was no rain right at that moment and I could work from the sidewalks.

I'm just itching to get out and put in a couple days work.......heck a couple hours would be nice. But, I'm not that crazy of a gardener to work in the rain.

Want spring to really arrive, not just visit for a day here & there.

.........the sky opened up

Category: daily chores | Posted: Wed Apr 12, 2006 7:02 pm

Couldn't go outside & work today unless I had hip waders on. Way too wet. Dark, cloudy.......doesn't even look like spring.

The daffodils are all beginning to lay down, due to the weight of the water on them. The rain's good for my trees I planted, they are definately getting watered in!

Have a small strawberry patch in, free plants to me. Just the kind I like. Also got free rhubarb starts.....that patch is really looking pathetic. Will be a couple years before I can harvest much from these little starts.

All in all.............a really sad looking yard & garden here.
