A Carolina Garden

Flowers Galore

Category: Village Square | Posted: Tue May 11, 2010 7:15 pm

There's been a lot of activity since January and the garden's in for the most part. Beside planting the vegetable boxes, Many seedlings from the greenhouse have found their way to the flower garden - Zinnias, 4 varieties of Sunflowers and thanks to the local botanical sale of native NC plants, New England Aster (yes, it will grow in the south), Giant Blue Lobelia, Red Bay Tree.
The roses bloomed so joyfully this year! I've had plenty for the house and they just filled the rose bed. Charlie bought 3 trellises for my climbers next to the deck.
The veg garden was started early too and we have several Zucchini in the fridge already. The rest of the boxes hold heading lettuce, Brandywine toms and a variety new to me, Niko, a medium tomato, Brussel Sprouts, cucumbers, sweet peppers, Asparagus, Leeks, Chinese Cabbage, Boc Choy, climbing Beans, Potatoes, a Blueberry and 2 raspberry bushes. Oh, and 3 Cauliflower.
Each year it amazes me how strong and healthy the plants can grow in a storage box and be productive and tasty.

It's freezing cold here in the Carolina's, but no snow on the coast. I'm longing for spring already and the seed orders have gone in. What a treat to recieve those colorful packets in the mail and start mentally planning the gardens. When the sun is out and I see that Carolina blue sky, I'm encouraged that warmth is not far behind. In the meantime, I am learning slowly and often by error, how to use the greenhouse. Most plants are hanging in there with the aid of a small gas heater. I really would hate to lose the Meyer Lemon Tree. So far so good.
These temperatures may cut down on the "bad bug" population.

Unkept Promises

Category: Village Square | Posted: Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:07 pm

I promised pictures over the summer, but got to the place where I could only spend the necessary time in the garden. It did well in spite of the heat this year. It took a while to diagnose the illness I was experiencing and then after several tests, surgery. Thank goodness, recovery was quick and I've been able to do fall cleanup, moving plants and diggin in bulbs. Roses grew up to the top of the rail on the front deck this year. Yippee!! We're still enjoying the beans and greens from the freezer and plan to grow more next year as they were the best success we had in veggies.
Surprise when the T&M catalog came - could it be time to start planning again? Then followed Stokes, Pine Tree and others. Winter will be fun!

We're thrilled with the "purple green beans". They have such a hearty flavor.

We're sure enjoying the harvest so far. The beets went to pickling, the leeks to stews and salad, the radishes to eating.
