Another snowy day

Category: my Winter thoughts | Posted: Fri Feb 05, 2010 6:06 pm

Well, here we go again... More snow! We've gotten about 3 inches so far, with more coming. It is wet and heavy. I've been watching the birds coming and going this morning. Actually, I like the pretty white covering everything, all the snow still on the ground had turned dirty and ugly. My garden beds that were beginning to emerge from their cover are once again under a blanket.
These birds flew in and out of the tree so quickly, I grabbed my camera but couldn't even tell what they were! We've had a lot of chickadees, cardinals, blue jays, sparrows, woodpeckers and juncos today, looking for a bite. We always clear off the feeders before we shovel the walks!
I'm so glad I don't have to go out to slip and slide on the roads. Guess I'll go study the puzzle!

Teaching this (old?) girl new tricks!

Category: my Winter thoughts | Posted: Thu Jan 28, 2010 3:51 am

Hello Stewbies! I thought I would relate my tales of mastering (sort of) the computer. Well, maybe not mastering, but I am learning how to do things that I never thought I needed to! Us older people were not raised with this computer technology, it does not come natural! I know you can take classes and all, but I don't want to! I stubbornly want to figure it out on my own! (or with a bit of help now and then, Thank you Frank and Toni!)
Anyway, I have been having fun uploading photos from my digital camera onto my garden page to share with you all. Not without a few mistakes and re-doing!! So, I hope you will take a look at my photos.
I have so many photo albums (the real tangible kind!)that are full of all my gardening efforts through the years! I wish it was possible for you to see all of those! I'm sure all of us older folks do! Anyway, my real expertise lies in working with tools such as my Felco pruners, hedgers, clippers, trowels, rakes, and well, you know... I'm a gardener!

something different in the sky!

Category: my Winter thoughts | Posted: Sun Jan 24, 2010 5:19 pm

I promised Bob that I would not sit at the computer for hours... but I just had to comment on our sky! It is a different color today (BLUE) and there is a bright object up there (THE SUN) and something is gone that we have gotten way too used to (CLOUDS)
The wind is pretty chilly, in fact it is only in the low 30s, but I can not tell you just how wonderful it is! I guess it might not last long, maybe even not all of today, but for now we'll take it.
Hurry up spring!

out from under the snow!

Category: my Winter thoughts | Posted: Sat Jan 23, 2010 6:36 pm

The snow is gradually disappearing! I guess it is slowly soaking in, because we haven't seen the sun for more than a week, although the temps are milder (low 30s) Yesterday the wind came up out of the southeast, and we had a bit of rain. So much better than snow! This morning we looked out and there were my little shrubs peeking out from their snow and ice prisons. I am thrilled to see them again! Also visible again are the rock borders and the concrete bench that had been completely buried.
It is still cloudy, but so much better. There are still big piles of snow where we scooped it away from the drive.
I am getting addicted to Garden Stew, it is like "virtual gardening" !
I'm also really having fun navigating around the site and getting to know you all.

Dreamin of my garden

Category: my first blog ever! | Posted: Thu Jan 21, 2010 4:25 pm

Hello again. I hope you have enjoyed viewing the photos I posted. I included one of me peeking out from the sweet Autumn Clematis.
So today, my endeavor was to start adding plants to my garden here at Garden Stew. This is quite fun, and I find myself dreamin of my plants that are out there buried in snow. Sometimes I stare out the windows at the garden beds and wonder what miracles are taking place. It fascinates me, when in the Spring, these plants emerge from the soil and come back to life! One of my favorites is the way the Hosta emerge. First the tiny, tightly wrapped tip, and each day reaching higher, and then one day it unfurls and spreads! So Pretty!
Oh, I could go on and on... Anyway, I have some young evergreen shrubs up by our front door that are buried under snow (although it is finally melting a little) I have to resist going out there and removing the snow! I miss them! I'm hoping they are alright! They have not ever been covered this long. We have had a lot of snow this year, and will probably get more.
It is cold, wet and yucky today. A lot of fog too. I guess I'll go back to the puzzle! Barbequed pork ribs for dinner!

The Dormant Gardener

Category: my first blog ever! | Posted: Wed Jan 20, 2010 4:25 pm

This is my very first blog ever, so here goes! I am really glad so have found Garden Stew. Its been fun to figure out how to navigate around the site, so much to see and read! I'm not very experienced with the computer, so it comes a little slow... but I am quite proud of myself for figuring out how to post my photos and even got one on as my "avatar" That is a white hardy Hibiscus flower from a beautiful plant. I actually transplanted that plant late last summer which was scary as I had never done that, so this Spring I will be anxious to see it come back to life in it's new spot! Oh, Winter is tough for me to get through! January and February are so gray, damp and cold here! I cook and bake a lot and we have been doing 1000 piece puzzles which are challenging and fun! Just finished one with woodpeckers, it is so pretty! We love to watch and feed birds.
I planted a whole bunch of daffodil bulbs last Fall, so that is something to look forward to. Also, I put in a new Northern Lights Forsythia and when the Forsythia blooms around here, it is Spring and time for me to go back to work!!Yea!! The forecast here does not include any sun for several days, so I will rely on Garden Stew to brighten my days!
