We are replacing all the old furniture in our loungeroom, apart from the tv unit, cat tower and lamp. My husband has left it all up to me, apart from the lounge. He has picked that, even though I insisted his choice was too big for the room. Now I need help making furniture choices that aren't going to leave this room feeling cramped, or make his big black/grey corner recliner couch stand out too much by adding furniture that is too small around it. The new lounge almost comes all the way up to the edge of the wall, wiping our our side table (which will have to go), and to the edge of the window on the other side. Current loungeroom: This is the lounge he has picked: I am thinking of replacing our old shag rug with something bigger and textured like this one: Also thinking of replacing our coffee table with this round one: I am open to any suggestions and also for artwork to potentionally hang above the lounge. I LOVE your new couch! I think the rug will work well, though if you could get it bigger than what you currently have, that would be even better. Honestly, I don't think a round table will work well in that room, with that couch. The angles of the couch are just wrong for a round coffee table or side tables. I'd also hang curtains. They'd be decorative more than functional because I see you already have blinds on the windows to control the light, but I think they'd help to soften the room. I don't even know where to begin with the art. That kind of thing depends so much on your own personal taste.
I agree with Ronni about the round table. I think with the shape of the couch and size of the room it would look awkward.
Is there room for negotiation about that recliner couch? It really is too large for the room. How many people would be sitting at one time? See of your husband will reconsider something smaller. Instead of a coffee table, how about two small square tables that could be easily moved to where they are needed, and left together in front of the couch when not needed. The rug depends on the couch--something low-pile seems good.
We need to seat 5 people as we have 2 children, plus almost every weekend we have my husbands 3 brothers over for a movie night. I think the couch is too big also, but I'm not sure I can change his mind. Maybe I could change the colour of the couch to chocolate brown? Would that help?
I don't think changing the color is going to make a lot of difference. It's just a big piece of furniture, period. Too, if the other pieces you are keeping in the room are black (like the TV stand I can see) then a brown couch and black furniture won't work terribly well. So you'll need to work with it. Scale down the other pieces in the room to compensate. If you're going to replace that side table, make it a rectangular shape rather than a square shape. Look for a coffee table that's long, with less width, rather than a wider, chunky one. Or go for something different, like a rectangular ottoman with a tray on top that will soften some of the hard angles in the room. It also looks like your new couch is going to run under the window and maybe obscure some of the bottom part of it? I suggested curtains on that window earlier, and I reiterate that, but you'll need to run the couch a bit out from the wall so that the curtains, which need to be floor length, can flow easily behind the couch. It will soften things somewhat. Also a throw or two on the couch and some cushions will also soften the lines of it, make it recede more into the room and not dominate the space so much.
Thank you that helped heaps! Our tv unit is dark brown, not black. But we are looking at replacing it also as the drawers are damaged from our kids and don't open.
Sectionals are tough because they limit your options. I would agree with others that with the sectional a round table will look a bit odd. You might look into a rectangular table if you are absolutely stuck on the sectional. Definitely recommend wall decor for your room. Wall decor is so fun and just adds even more to your space by expressing your personality!
