The first week in February on the Island of Long, most plants by rights should be sleeping. Please tell that to my hydrangeas. Notice the date these pics were taken. I sure do hope these plants know what they are doing. Cause if not, it will be the third year with zero flowers on them.
I've been amazed by the amount of bulbs and plants that are bursting into life in my garden here in Scotland. Even the fruit trees and bushes are beginning to bud up. Maybe I should go out and have a little talk to them and tell them to go back to sleep for a while longer.
WOW - that definitely seems really early for the Island of LONG Honest it does. Usually wouldn't you guys still be blanketed by snow this time of year?
If the soil temperature is right the roots will put out growth, you might want to mulch them really well and maybe have some cloches on hand for any snow you get the rest of the winter. Any ideas on why it hasn't bloomed the last 3 years?
We just haven't been that cold. And like I said in the OP we've only had two inches so far. Honestly four or five inches would be a good insulator if the temp decides to take a good dip. Thursday has the potential of dropping three plus inches, so we'll see. Wednesday is going to be in the mid fifty range. Hop on the weather roller coaster!
There is three plus inches of mulch in all the planting beds. Are you recommending I add a little more? I can grab it from other beds if that is the case. They have not bloomed due to extreme cold winds and weather after they set buds from an extended warm spell. My bet is it's gonna happen again.
