Hi, I have some blueberries that was sent to me from the UK. I wonder if any one can share her/his successful experience in sprouting blueberry seeds? Also, I live in a Zone 9/10, will blueberries grow here? Thanks Guys.
Blueberries need cold to grow. The best thing for the seeds to grow is to freeze them for a couple of months. This way the seeds think that they have overwintered. I am not sure if you have enough cold over winter for blueberry production. Maybe you have to choose a suitable variety that is more adapted to warmer winters. Sometimes we get -15, sometimes we get little frost, and the blueberries still grow. I think blueberries will grow. Break the fruits open and try to paint the juice onto a kitchen towel. you should see the little seeds on the kitchen towel. Dry and then freeze them.
Thank you very much Odif. Will try that and will keep all updated. Although I have small chance to grow him here (zone 9 - 10) where we almost never get to freezing point @ winter and heat can sour to 35C in summer. Nevertheless no harm to try.
I looked on the internet and the variety of blueberries that thrives in zone 7-10 is called "southern highbush" I think any blueberries will grow at yours, they may not all set fruit. Blueberries like acid soil so mulching with pine needles and pinebark is what I do to try and keep the ph of my blueberries low. They like water in spring and summer. maybe you could grow them in pots and put them in a cool place in winter. Blueberries are rustic and survive our summer heat. Typically 35 or more in summer.
