New Stock Pond; how to clean

Hello everyone:

I am a newbie on your site and have a question about my brand Behler 8 ft round stock tank.

Does anyone know what can be used to safely clean a dirty brand new stock tank? I know I should not use anything with detergent but am at a loss how to clean before I put in the water, plants, and my fish.

Thank you for your response, I wondered if the bleach would leave a residue?

 

I have read that it's not safe to really use although it cleans, apparently baking soda cleans them and this link maybe helpful otherwise.

Thank you; I should have known that as I am chemically sensitive and can not use any petro product or disinfectant etc. Baking Soda makes complete sense.

 

If its a new tank no need to use anything to clean it ! Just use a toilet type brush to remove any residue it may have and fill with water. Let the water sit for 24 to 36 hours or so and that will eliminate any chlorine if you are on city water ! Chlorine dissipates after being exposed to the air for a while ! If you do not want to wait,, go to a pet store or WalMart and get some de-chlorinator like used in fish tanks !!

 

You need to be careful then if your sensitive to chemicals but mart always gives sound advice

Gail, I used a little baking soda and water to clean tank. The tank is doing great with 2 small goldfish and one large goldfish. I have seeded the tank with "microlift-plus" fall and winter. I plan to transfer Koi shortly. Thanks everyone who gave me advise it was greatly appreciated.

Oh I am pleased the baking soda worked with out any harm to yourself...I was reading about the microlift and it sounds good stuff and for protecting the tank...I don't know if this link will help you for regarding the future for your tank regarding purchasing anything to help keeping it right regarding adding Koi as they're very expensive and need to be kept germ free.
