Well our council sweep them into piles but then just leave them. I've never understood why they don't actually take them away as the heaps end up all over the street again whenever there's a wind.
Last year the local street department took the leaves if they were in the paper lawn bags which decompose.
Why would anyone want to rake up good fertilizer ? We just mow them and let them decompose on the grass !
Mart here the council clear the leaves off the roads as they block the drains and can cause flooding. It's just a pity they don't actually take them away for recycling though. If they removed them they would save themselves time and effort having to come back out and rake them off the roads time and time again.
They've not be long around here...they have men sweeping them up in piles and an open caged van takes them away, then we get the sweeper twice yearly summer and winter, when all the leaves have gone.
The council workers come along first with people with blowers aand blow the leaves out of the gutters along the streets...then a machine comes along with large circular brushes on it and it sucks-up the leaves. They do not remove the leaves from the lawns, their focus is keeping the storm drains open to prevent flooding.
Sjoerd besides cleaning the roads here...the canals and any lawns are cut regular and the leaves are got up that way....come December it will be spotless here thank god.
I forgot that everyone is in the UK and other countries ! Here and in most towns they just rake and burn them ! Makes it smell like fall ! Out in the country as I am we just mow them up and use it as fertilizer !
Why's that mate? or don't you know mart I suppose our farmers do what you do use them as fertilizer besides people who have allotments but regarding people in streets etc you have a green bin which is emptied every 2 wks...they're brought it in now that you will have to pay £35 a year for your bins to be collected or otherwise take it to the skip yourself.
Good for you Mart. That is just plain sensible. Leaves breakdown oké, but when they have been mulched the process goes quicker.
Where we live here in town leaves are raked up between the sidewalk and street and large trucks come by with BIG hoses and suck the leaves into the trucks. There is a large field out in the county where the trucks dump them. They stay there through the winter and then are plowed under in the spring. dooley
That is the smart thing to use them for Dooley ! On years we do not bale hay we just mow and leave the grass to feed the soil ! If we bale hay we have to fertilize and that ain`t cheap !
