I used to get hedgehogs in my garden every year but, sadly, none have appeared this year. I'm so glad to hear that you have them and are taking care of them.

Thank you Eileen sorry that you haven't had any, they're getting more rare. Last autumn i piled up a lot of twigs and branches at the back of the back garden to make a sort of a house so they could over winter.

Last week when we're walking Barley we came across a young one trying to cross the road. It's a busy road so hubby put him in the hedge over the other side but he wouldn't stay, he wanted to cross again. We knew of someone close by that had a hedgehog house in the front garden so hubby took him there. The girl said that she'll put him in the house and cover the entrance until it was dark and that's what happened. Couldn't see any more so he must have been alright.

Those little suckers can squeeze through the tiniest of spaces! Saw a video of one going through a 2" wide opening with no trouble. Hardware cloth may be the best barrier to prevent them from using your garden as an all night buffet.

I am assuming they are vegetarians and would be happily munching on my veggies or perennials.

No they're not vegetarians, they eat bugs, slugs, worms and what I put out is dried dog food and water.:) But not any fish based food. They're not supposed to have bread and milk.

Ah, interesting, do they eat bugs, worms, etc

I just Googled hedgehogs and found out there are no naturally occurring ones in the US.

Yes they do eat bugs, worms, etc. That's a shame that you don't have them.

They're in decline over here so that's why it's important to feed them and make a house or a pile of branches and dried leaves so they can sleep and hibernate. :)
