Not only spray now, but be(e!) aware that paint additives are available that will prevent the structural damage they are capable of creating. They will be killed by such additives.

Hmmm thanks for the advice @Dirt. I can imagine spraying the nests, I can't imagine getting my hand through the tiny openings to paint things. Do these paint additive come in a spray? Or could I just put them into one of this spray bottles?

So boracare seeps into the wood. Its concentrated so this makes 5 gallons or so.

This type product is mixed into the coatings or paint you use around and on the house.

Thanks so much Dirt. Sound like good advice. We can take the grating off to have better access to the area.

BTW, I love this website @Frank. There is always someone who knows something about sometimes esoteric problems!!

In my neck of the woods - Vancouver Island, BC, Canada we've 'discovered' Giant Asian Hornets! They're HUGE. So far one or two nests have been found and destroyed and I sure hope we've got them all!

This is a cut and paste photo of one from our local newspaper.

@Sjoerd i've only just saw this discussion and it made me crawl...we had a wasp nest in the eaves over the porch and then in the kitchen i kept thinking the fuse was going on the washer plug hearing humming, oh no only a wasp nest in the cavity the back of my washer...so hubby got Nippon ant powder and dosed both at night and they kept coming and he did another dose above the porch and it cured it but it took 3 doses to the one cavity one and come early next march he's doing it again to make sure and filling the hole up [IMG]

That was a nasty experience you had Gail. I hope that they will never return.
