Pecans in hopper.jpg cracked pecans.jpg The feed store has pecans in-- the store buys pecans from people and then sells them. One dollar a pound at the store! I got 10 pounds, and have been cracking and picking out pecan meat yesterday afternoon and this morning.
Years ago we were given a pecan cracker, invented by an elderly man in Oklahoma. It works a treat! The whole pecans are fed into the hopper, then go down the chute and get cracked. There is an adjustment on the back so the plate fits the size of the pecans. I've put the old gentleman up for canonization!

Oh I need one of those!! I love pecans but find them a pain to shell. If you buy them here without shells they cost way too much.

    Brilliant :)

We have walnuts over here, takes me ages to shell a whole one  When I do I bang the 2 halves of the shell together to pretend to be a very small horse :D

I am liking that apparatus, Jane. How much did you have to shell-out for it?

Zigs, you’d better clippity-clop to the hardware shop to buy yourself a sheller.
Ach walnuts are a real hassle to get the nut out of. When we were travelling through New Zeeland with the magic bus, the chap who ran a backpackers’ offered us a bag of walnuts and a bag of apples gratis to take with us. We took the apples, but had to decline the walnuts. Those things took forever to get open and the nut out. It was nice gesture though.
A shame really, as I lurve walnuts in food.

Sjoerd, I didn't have to "shell out" anything--it was a gift from a friend I shared pecans with when we lived in town. (Good pun, by the way!;))
Zigs, coconut shells make a more convincing horse sound, and are just as hard to open as walnuts.
No patent will be filed. The gentleman passed away a few years ago but, like Johnny Appleseed, he left a fine legacy behind him.
