I'm thinking ahead to having to be absent for a period of time. The length of time will be unknown.

Back up plans are on top of other back up plans, but I am wondering if anyone has experimented with and had success with any homemade self watering devices.

I have tried burying a pop bottle with holes and panty hose over it to keep dirt out for a slow drip of water . ( my holes were way too big and it didn't work well) I've heard of someone using a water bottle with a cotton swab in the neck.

I won't be able to use anything commercial such as water from the house or timers. I've seen the little bottle attachments on Amazon with a spike, but they do not appeal to me due to the mixed reviews.

For the Greenhouse I am considering the rain barrel with a hose attached with little holes drilled into it, and the water set at a trickle. It would not be something I could quickly set up though.

Does anyone have anything they have had success with to keep plants/pots/gardens going when having to be absent? ( Aside from a good dousing, mulching and crossed fingers) :)

Thanks for any shares and suggestions. :)

That's a challenge Melody. I wish I had an answer. I would make sure everything has a good layer of mulch and good soaking. Pots moved to the shade if possible. I wish I could offer better. Also I hope all goes well for you.

@danielI hadn't thought about moving the pots Daniel. That's a good idea.
