What have you done today in the Garden?

I got up early to water the sweetcorn, and ran the drip system for an hour. That's all. Volunteering today at the free clinic, where I do registration. It's air conditioned.

 

Today I spent most of the time in the bees. Did more harvesting.


I just never get tired of toms.


With that last hard downpour some of the tape on the tubes let loose. It did give me an opportunity to see how well the paper towel tubes are working this year.


This is a Crocosmia “Prince of Orange”. It has bloomed for the first time in three years. I am not sure what is going on with it.


We spent all afternoon and this evening processing the harvest shown on the first foto up above. Now we are unwinding by watching an old episode of “Escape To The Country”.

Going upstairs, a glance at the harbour tower from the balcony and the “Love Boat” tied up nearby. Pshew, I am ready for bed.

Did a bit more weeding around the rhododendrons and the robin was watching me and when i moved he jumped down onto the ground where i was.

That is a wonderful harvest Sjoerd. And a beautiful view. It must be quite something when the wind blows.

Today was the first cool drizzly morning in a long time. I was in town yesterday so could not garden. Usually we both go, but Hubby stayed to keep an eye on the sky. This morning was the beginning of the first raspberry harvest. Two ice cream pails came up to the house. Some tomatoes came up for a brief visit before meeting the salt and pepper mills for breakfast. ;-) A third harvest of artichokes will contribute to dinner tomorrow. Another pail of peas came up for podding - they are slowing down now. There is already a feel of fall in the air, and with the animal's behaviour. My gardens need to wrap up early this year anyhow, so perhaps it will all work out in the end.

@Sjoerd - The wild raspberries are primarily behind the barn. I don't think I've ever had a bear visit them. They do like the saskatoons though, and yesterday on my trip to town a wee bruin ( last years cub) was peaking out over a bush, and then reaching up to pull down a bough and slurp them off. There were two logging truck coming about a km away, so I radiod them and warned them. They were great and slowed right down to keep him safe and not disturb his little Jack Pot. Everything is so lush right now, that I think my little piece of wild doesn't interest them much. They would much rather find the berries in the bush with no human beans around.

Wild berry patches in the boonies are definitely bear bonanza. hahaha Your bride had to share - good thing she got there first earlier. My Auntie was picking huckleberries once and bent over, when she stood up a bear was doing the same on the other far side of the patch. She reluctantly gave the huckleberry patch to the bear. They are the last berry feast of the year for them.

Bit of a lazy day today, just watered the plants and containers. Also washed my hair.

 

Trying to tidy the back garden, there's a lot of stinging nettles that i cut down couldn't dig it up because the ground is to hard from the dry weather. Noticed that a deciduous Azalea was struggling a bit so i watered it a lot and it picked up, hopefully it will send out new shoots. Can't do anymore until the bin gets emptied next Friday.This afternoon i watered all of the blueberries in pots and the pots in the front under the kitchen window.

 

Trying to do less hard work. Fortunately nothing urgent needs doing. Just a little hand watering. The rest is on the drip lines. Harvesting a few tomatoes, peppers, and summer squashes. Digging some potatoes when I feel like it.

 

And your Bride. Never much fun to share berries with a bear

 

Too right. What alarmed her was how cavalier and oblivious to danger she had been when piking down in that tall patch. Bears had not been on her mind at all. It was a beginner’s mistake. She should have aware and had a way out.

That was the thing about living remotely in Alaska— you simply have to be aware all the time. After a while it becomes second nature and you do it without thinking…but all the little things we had to learn in the first place. It is a different way of living.

 

I watered the potted Herb plants, and the hubby sprayed and killed 4 hornets nest for me. Maybe some of the tomatoes will be ready for picking.

 

Today was my first patchy frost at the lower garden. It was unexpected so I did not cover last night. I harvested three zuchinni, checked in on everyone and other than a couple of wee frost kisses all seems well. I planted peas and onions around the perimiter that faces the creek, hoping that helps keep the frost away from the beans in the middle. Here's hopin!

The traps that hubby set up beside my decimated carrots caught a pocket gopher last night - I'm thankful for that as the greedy little goblin was wreaking havoc on my root vegetables. I don't mind sharing the odd one....but.....not the the crop. I'll leave them set up for a couple of days encase it was a family affair, but then hopefully I can clean out the carrots.
