    They look delicious!
I showed the recipe to Hubby, and we had fun looking up some of the Dutch directions and ingredients. He immediately looked up "Donkere basterdsuiker", and I really liked "theelepe" and "Roomboter". That was great Sjoerd. :) They really look good. ( and I didn't know that caster sugar was brown sugar....). I bet your house smells great!

    Sorry Mel.
I am a bit embarrassed. Y’know I didn’t stop to think that it wasn’t in English, that website. I just forgot. Ahh well, it was meant to show the cookies anyway. We used that recipe and they turned out pretty good.

These are still hot and very soft. I moved them to the rack a little soon, but I had more cookies waiting to go in. Production is production.

This pic shows the cookies looking reddish, but in actuality they are brown, just like on the website. I am well chuffed.

I can see that it was fun looking up some words on that website. I’ll bet you guys had a good laugh, but if you could hear them pronounced, you might laugh even harder.

Mel— Caster sugar is very finely ground sugar with invertsugar added. It is white. The yellow basterdsuiker has caramel added. The dark, or brown basterdsuiker has molasses added. I had to look this up myself. In fact I saw that I misspelled it, it is bastErdsuiker and not bastArdsuiker. Oh dear. This is turning to a bit of a sticky wicket isn’t it.

*an interesting side note is that invertsuiker is what I would sometimes give my bees right before winter if they had not quite gathered enough honey during the fall.

My Bride and I chuckled at you guys looking up the words. We could see why you just had to look up basterdsuiker.

Now Pac and Daniël— you guys really do make me feel good. Thank you so much.

No worries Sjoerd, that is the good thing about this world wide web - one push of a button and it is translated!

Sjoerd… thank you for the detailed info. I thought that the spell checker had gone mad…OK brown sugar from the Netherlands, mixed with molasses and sweeteners and invertsuiker - And is impure enough to help your family of bees to over winter. Every day I always learn something new. Now pronouncing it is another tongue twister.

There definitely was a feeling of school boy humour going on when we were looking up the words. hahaha Brought back flash backs to elementary school and learning how to use the Webster's dictionay. Some words were always looked up by young school children, and never failed that some were underlined to show that you were not alone in looking those words up. :smt005

I didn't know that about Caster sugar Sjoerd. Or the caramel in the golden sugar. The molasses dark brown I was familiar with.

So with some reading....Caster Sugar is called Berry Sugar here. I have seen it from time to time. And it looks like it can be made by processing the regular granulated sugar in a food processor, to make smaller crystals. There is no mention here of the invertsugar being a part of it...but a seperate product one can make. Very interesting stuff Sjoerd. :) The science of baking! I had no idea that a cake or cookie would be different with a finer grain of sugar.

Hubby has volunteered to sacrifice himself in a cookie trial with a finer sugar. Your's look amazing....so you've set the cookie bar high my friend.

Melody.. very good tracking on the finer sugars….I thought maybe the finer ground sugar was powdered sugar…
I’d be happy to help your DH and become a volunteer as your cookie taster..:)
