Because of the above we've been told by a certain politician to use turnips instead. Usually they're grown for animal feed. Now there's a shortage of turnips but how they're going to use them like tomatoes is very interesting.

I read about that. Shortages mainly due to bad weather and electricity prices in Africa, Netherlands and Europe. . Well if anyone comes up with a drink like turnip juice let me know… of course during the potato blight in Ireland they ate tulip bulbs instead.. No one is pushing tulips?

The weather patterns across the world has been far from normal for years.
New Zealand is sinking due to cyclones and due to latest weather patterns California the desert mind you has snow and sinking . The Netherlands has adopted a gate system for how to block the sea from flooding their country…the rest of the world can learn from them.. yeah?

I would have thought that tulip bulbs would be poisonous.
Yes you're right about the weather changing.

Most of the Netherlands is low lying land reclaimed from the sea in the first place. Don't think anywhere is sinking any more than the usual up and downs caused by plate tectonics? The vocal minority that likes to scare the bejesus out of everyone claims that sea level is rising, well it is, but nothing like the 6 to 8 inches that has been claimed for the past 100 years.

Going ''Down Under'' here is a recent update on the change in sea levels there. It IS just a tiny bit sarcastic. :D

Anyone got any ideas what people are going to do with turnips instead of tomatoes?

Grate 2 turnips and gently fry in a little olive oil with garlic, onions and sea salt and cracked black pepper.

When softened, spread over a pizza base/pitta or similar, top with grated cheese, grill until golden brown and sprinkle parmesan :)

Yep, it's cyclone season in that part of the world. My daughter & son in law were on a cruise. They were supposed to visit some islands on their trip from Brisbane in Queensland, but the captain sensibly decided to take a different route and sailed along the south east coast of Australia and down to Tasmania where they were able to catch up with my son and his family instead. She said she was sea sick on the way back home.
The thing is that the floods would not make any difference to the sea levels generally. They will always happen when there is an over abundance of rain. It wouldn't be so bad in built up areas if the gardens were not covered in concrete. Us gardening folks will have to spread the word - a bit late I suppose in the cities.

I hope there are at least canned tomatoes! Not having any at all is sad.

Here the grocery store "fresh" tomatoes seem to have declined in quality. Really hard and flavorless. Almost like red turnips...

I think I should add a few more tomato plants for canning this year....

I do like turnips, in soup or shredded and add lemon juice. My mom used to like cooking them and making something like mashed potatoes, only with turnips. He dad liked growing them.

Logan, marmalade braised turnips are very tasty. You'll need a good splash of oil, and some butter (about 50g) a dozen or so baby onions or shallots, 100ml stock, 75g marmalade, and 8 baby turnips, as well as 100ml cream and a pinch or two of chopped up rosemary.
You'll need some sort of pot that can go in the oven OR on the hob. Stick the oil and butter in the pot to melt and add the onions to soften, then add the stock and marmalade'
Bring that to the boil and then add the little turnips. Put this lot into the oven for about 25 - 30 minutes (pre heated to Gas 3 - 325F) Check the turnips are nice and soft.
Then put it all back on the hob, add cream and rosemary just before serving.

This goes well with any poultry, especially duck - or if you're like us veggies Quorn!!

@Daniel W you have a very good point! We always carry stock of canned tomatoes anyway and passata. This is a must as a base for so many sauces (usually with a pinch of bicarbonate of soda)
We often didn't have veggies that were out of season when I was growing up, but then we relied on our local farmers and bought local food much more.
These days we are seeing all the farms closing down, and valuable land being swallowed up in concrete. The people who THINK they should be in charge are destroying our food chain as we have always known it, and are introducing genetically modified crap, insects to eat and powdered rubbish manufactured in factories. Cows for beef and milk are to be done away with, and sheep and chickens seem to be on the destroy list as well. When the life gas (CO2) has been depleted just a little bit more, it will begin to destroy our plants as well, and our carbon dioxide is already pathetically diminished. It all needs to stop! We should ALL open our eyes and worry.
